Namatay si Llorente noong Agosto 19, 2009 dahil sa kanser habang lulan ng eroplano pauwi ng Pilipinas galing sa Saudi.

KATHMANDU - When Anita Gimmi was unable to find work in her native Nepal last year, she borrowed 1,300 dollars and travelled to Qatar to take up a two-year contract with a cleaning company there.

Less than a year later, the 26-year-old has been forced to return home still heavily in debt after becoming one of thousands of foreign workers to be laid off as the economic downturn hits Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

In death as in life, former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino continues to be a political phenomenon.
The Aquino family themselves had not anticipated the people’s outpouring of love, adulation and
respect for their mother after she died last July 31. Tens of thousands lined up to view her remains
and hundreds of thousands more accompanied her funeral cortege to the cemetery.  It evoked a
sense of déjà vu in people old enough to remember her slain husband Ninoy’s own mammoth
funeral cortege more than 25 years ago.

The late President Corazon C. Aquino was an exemplar of what the leader of a democratic country should be.

Her entire life was an example of moral courage. After the assassination of her husband, Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., she was called upon to lead the fight against the Marcos dictatorship and she did not flinch from the challenge. With the help of the people (People Power had its beginnings in the Philippines), the Church, the rebel soldiers and their leaders, she won the fight and ousted Ferdinand E. Marcos. She restored democracy and after serving for six years in Malacañang, she relinquished power. But even in her retirement she continued to be a strong voice against dishonesty, cheating and corruption in government.
