politics at its madness. It bared an umbilical cord that binds two
powerful dynasties – the Arroyos of Malacanang and the Ampatuans, warlords
of Maguindanao and the ARMM. Their ties have been nurtured by political
patronage that, at its worst form, breeds a politics of violence.

The progressive and patriotic network of Filipinos in Europe under MIGRANTE Europe condoles with the family, relatives, friends and colleagues of the more than 57 victims of what has now been known as the 'Maguindanao Massacre'. We mourn the senseless and unacceptable loss of lives of the victims, in the same way that we grieve over the victims of extra-judicial killings and disappearances. We feel not only the loss, but also the anger and bitterness felt by the victims' families, many of whom have gone abroad to earn a living.

Held in Athens, Greece on November 1-4, 2009*

More than 100 delegates and guests representing 45 organizations of migrants, refugees and advocates from 20 countries, participated in the successful holding of the second International Assembly of Migrants and Refugees (IAMR) held November 1-4, in Athens, Greece. The assembly, held at the Athens University of Economics and Business, and the Polytechnic University of Athens, was held as a counter-assembly to the government-led Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) that also convened in Athens last November 5.

Arroyo govt failed to create the millions of new jobs it promised

The Arroyo administration was unable to create the jobs it promised to generate during the past five years, a report made by the Philippines’ socioeconomic body said.

Unemployment “remains high and meeting job creation targets continue to be a challenge," the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said in its updated Medium Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPDP) for 2010.

Almost two thousand years ago, St. Paul the Apostle, came to Athens to preach the “Good News” at the Acropolis.

Two thousand years later, the uprooted people (migrants and refugees) and the faith communities met in Athens for a dialogue, where they shared stories and vision of salvation, emancipation and liberation.

The uprooted people shared their stories of suffering and struggle. They gave witness to the hope that is in them. They expressed their longing for a caring society, where families are not broken up in order to survive, a society of justice and solidarity.

4th ECOFIL held in Athens, Greece

The 4th Europewide Conference of Organizations of Filipinos (4thECOFIL)  was successfully held Nov. 2, 2009 in Athens, Greece. The ECOFIL was a major side event of the 2nd International Assembly of Migrants and Refugees IAMR2), held Nov. 1-4. The 2ndIAMR brought together 20 delegates from 10 countries.

The 4th ECOFIL, which  was attended by delegates from Italy, Switzerland, UK, Greece and the Netherlands and guests from Asia-Pacific, the Philippines, and North America,  heard the report of Garry Martinez, chairperson of Migrante International, a powerpoint presentation on the Philippine  National Situation  and on Migrants and Alternative Development Strategy by Sonny Africa of the International Department of the progressive think-tank IBON Philippines.

A human rights group warned Friday in their annual report that the year 2006 is the 'worst' for human rights in the country. The group Karapatan said that 185 activists have been killed in the last 11 months, a record since the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was overthrown in 1986. (Philippine Star, Dec. 1, 2006)
